BACKGROUND

The Dukas Karate Institute is affiliated to Karate South Africa (National Karate Body of South Africa), Sedibeng Karate Association, WSKF South Africa and WSKF Japan.

The style that we train in is based on the original Shotokan Style as taught by the late Master Gichin Funakoshi and Masatoshi Nakayama (JKA Style).

The Club started in August 1973 under the late Sensei James Havenga and Sensei Mike Dukas. After the death of Sensei James, Sensei Mike took the club from strength to strength and it is now one of the most successful karate clubs in the Vaal Triangle.

The club has come a long way from first starting in an old church hall, to an old café, to a shopping centre in SE7 and finally to the present beautiful dojo in SW5, Vanderbijlpark.

The striking Vereeniging dojo situated in Three Rivers was officially opened in September 2005.

The Dukas Karate Institute is very active in both National and International Karate Tournaments. This Institute has produced champions in both kata and kumite divisions at World Shotokan events, Africa All Styles events (Africa Cup), South African National All Styles Karate events (KSA) and National Shotokan events.
